The Constitution of Ukraine Ukraine is a sovereign state. As any sovereign state Ukraine has its own Constitution. It was adopted on the 28th of June, 1996. The people's deputies adopted the Constitution at the Fifth Session of the Supreme Rada. The Constitution is the Main Law of Ukraine. It determines and guarantees the rights and duties of the citizens of Ukraine and regulates the rights and powers of the higher and local bodies of power. The Ukrainian Constitution consists of fifteen Chapters. Every Chapter consists of several articles. There are 161 articles in the Constitution all in all Chapter I consists of 20 Articles and determines the basic principles of the Ukrainian state, such as status, citizenship, national language, natural resources, foreign affairs, state symbols. Ukraine is a sovereign state (Article 1).It is a republic (Article 5). Article 3 states that the biggest social value of Ukraine is a person. Article 10 states that Ukrainian is the national (state) language in our country. Article 20 says that the state flag of Ukraine is blue-and-yellow; that the main element of the national emblem is a Trident; that the anthem of Ukraine is the music written by M. Articles 65-68 determine the duties of the citizens of Ukraine. The main of them are the duties to defend their Motherland, to defend environment, to pay taxes.
