English Pubs
1. For many British people the pub is the center of their social life because for most people in Britain Pub is a place with a friendly atmosphere where they can meet their friends and talk over a drink and often – over a meal. At lunchtime you can get sandwiches or a “ploughman’s lunch” – bread and cheese. In the evening many pubs serve “basket meals” – chicken and chips served in a basket – in the bar and some have restaurants where you can get a complete meal.
2. It is quite normal for women to go into pubs in Britain but they must follow the licensing laws like other people. These rules are very complicated and control the time when pubs are allowed to open. Pubs are usually open from 11 a.m. to 2 or 2.30 p.m. and in the evening from about 6 p.m. to 10.30 or 11p.m., but this time varies in different parts of the country.
3. Licensing laws also control who is allowed to be entered in the pub. You must be no less than 16 years when going into pubs and 18 before you are allowed to buy alcoholic drinks (hot drinks). It is serous offence to buy or to try buying alcohol under the age of 18 or buy it for someone under this age. If the pub owner considers you are under 18, he’ll refuse to serve you. Most pubs have 2 bars: a saloon bar and a public bar. The saloon bar is better decorated and more comfortable and the drinks are more expensive.
4. When you go into a pub, you go up to the bar and tell a barman what you want. He will give you everything you’ve ordered and you have to pay immediately. Then you take it to the table you want to sit. It is not necessary to tip the barman but you must not expect him to bring your drink to your table.
5. You can buy many kinds of drinks in pubs but the typical drink is beer. There are many different types of beer, both draught and bottled, which you buy by the pint or a half. If you don’t like English beer, you can buy continental beer which is chilled too. You can also buy spirits like whisky or gin and usually wine by the glass but not by the bottle.
