The Smiths are in their dining-room.There are five of them: Mr. Smith, the head of the family, Mrs. Smith, his wife, and their children: John, Ann and Kitty. They are having breakfast. Mrs. Smith is putting some cornflakes on the boy's plate. The elder daughter is passing the sugar to her father. Mrs. Smith asks John if he would have sugar on his cornflakes. John refuses, because he wants some more milk instead. Then Mrs. Smith asks Kitty why she isn't eating anything, despite Ann is already finishing her cornflakes. Kitty answers that she does not like cornflakes and she is just thirsty. Then she asks her mum to give her some tea and cakes. Mr. Smith offers Kitty to be a good girl and to have some more cornflakes, because their family was going to have bacon and eggs, so after that Kitty can get her tea with toast and marmalade. After that Mr. Smith asks his wife to give him a little more cornflakes. Mrs. Smith passes the plate to her husband and asks him if he will have bacon and eggs. Mr. Smith answers that he will have it, and, additionally, he will have a nice strong cup of tea. Then he notices that he must leave in a quarter of an hour or so. The father is already having his cup of tea while the children are still talking over their cornflakes.
