Read the text and mark the statements True or False.

1 Climate change can stop us growing food. It takes 1/4 a bottle of oil to make one plastic bottle.

2 Traffic jams cause air and noise pollution.

3 Sleep mode is OK for the environment.

TEXT:
We keep on hearing about the environmental damage we cause because we don't take care of the world around us. The result is air, water and noise pollution, which makes us ill; climate change, which makes it difficult to live and grow food, because of sudden changes in the weather; and we are using up our natural resources, like water, oil and wood.

So what can we do to fight it?

Reduce, reuse and recycle! Don't buy drinks in plastic bottles unless you need to; don't get rid of them in general rubbish – wash, reuse and recycle them and take glass to bottle banks. Pick up a plastic bottle, fill it up to a 1/4 with oil. Now look at it carefully, that's how much oil you need to make one! Rather than carrying on filling our planet with rubbish which can take years to break down, we can recycle plastic, glass, aluminium, paper and card to make new things.

Take your bike or walk! Don't use the car and end up in a traffic jam, so you're late, annoyed and cause air and noise pollution. If you need to travel far or on a motorway, share a car with other people or use public transport. It's also important to eat seasonal, local food to reduce pollution and stop using up petrol or diesel to transport it by lorry. Make and bring lunch from home in reusable containers, it's healthier, cheaper and tastier than food you buy in the shops.

Save energy and resources! Turn off the lights when you leave a room, switch off laptops, mobile phones or TVs, don't leave them in sleep mode. Don't have a bath or shower every day; use less water to wash clothes or dishes; turn off the tap while you're brushing your teeth; reuse the water you get from cooking vegetables to make soup or to water plants in the garden. To help keep water clean, don't buy or use products with words like 'danger' or 'warning' on the labels, because they can pollute clean drinking water. Help save our environment. We've only got one!
