The house with chimeras is an amazing castle shrouded in secrets and legends
The most famous attraction in Kiev is a House with chimeras, resembling a real castle from a fairy tale. It is impossible to pass by without lingering on this outlandish building, the history of which is shrouded in secrets and legends. The luxurious facades and the unique staircase at the entrance are decorated with amazing sculptures – the works of the famous master Elio Sala. It gives the full impression that these fantastic chimeras and animals were removed from the peaked roofs of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
Any viewer who happens to pass by this building is deeply impressed by the heads of elephants, antelopes, crocodiles and rhinos embedded in the walls of the house. Lizards hiding in the grooves are also surprising, as well as unique concrete trunks, which not only represent an unusual sight, but also serve as drains.
One glance, accidentally thrown at a photo of this splendor, is enough to understand that the creator of the House with chimeras is an extraordinary person, architecture for whom was a real vocation. It is believed that the house was built thanks to the dispute of three friends: Vladislav Gorodetsky, Alexander Kobelev and Vladimir Leontovich. So, Gorodetsky acquired a plot of land, which in those years was considered unsuitable for construction. His colleagues reacted with distrust to this idea, and as a result, 3 friends made a bet that within 2 years Vladislav Gorodetsky would build a house, which he did in 1902-1903, exactly on the eve of his 40th birthday. During the construction, an unknown material was used at that time – cement. The building was built in the Art Nouveau style, which, of course, dictates certain conditions. So, the House with chimeras is beautiful not only from the outside, its interior is also striking in its uniqueness.
Getting into the house from the main entrance, you can see the unique walls painted with marine paintings, which delight and fascinate everyone who enters the room. The ceiling is decorated with an original plaster molding, which is very reminiscent of an octopus. Octopus tentacles are decorated in various colors. They descend almost to the walls and represent amazing combinations of marine animals and plants.
The address where the House with chimeras is located is quite easy to find: 10 Bankovaya Street. Surprisingly, this house is located a few dozen meters from the Presidential Administration of Ukraine.
