Sophia Cathedral, or Sophia of Kyiv, is a landmark of the history and architecture of Ukraine, located on Sophia Square in the city of Kyiv. Built in 1037 by Prince Yaroslav of Kyiv. Named after Sofia. It had the status of a cathedral. It was intermittently the residence of Kyiv metropolitans (Orthodox and Union). Until the 13th century, it was used as the main church of Russia, the burial place of the great princes of Kyiv. Chronicles were kept at the cathedral, and the first library was created. Declined in the 14th century. Restored by the efforts of Metropolitan Peter Mohyla and Hetman Ivan Mazepa. It was the main temple of the Sophia Monastery (since 1638). Part of the National Reserve "Sofia Kyivska" (since 1934). It combines Byzantine and Baroque architectural styles. One of the few surviving buildings from the time of Russia.
