In 1925, dogs showed us that humanity could rely on them. It was also known as the Great Race of Mercy and The Serum Run. A small Alaskan town of Nome was in the throes of a deadly diphtheria epidemic. There was no treatment as it was cut off in the depths of severe Alaskan winter. To save the town's inhabitants, 20 teams of sled dogs transported a vital anti-toxin over 674 miles (1,085km) of ice and snow, in just six days, through the most brutal winter conditions.
