LAB GAS SCARE IN SCHOOL

An experiment in a school chemistry lab led to 33 children and staff being taken ill. Emergency services were called after a pupil heated a chemical on a Bunsen burner for too long, producing a potentially harmful gas.

Students complained of chest and throat pains.

Two teachers and a pupil were taken to hospital but the others were treated at the scene.

JAIL RISK FOR TEACHERS OVER ABUSE

Teachers, social workers and other professionals could face jail if they fail to report fears of child abuse, under a proposal by Labour.

Former Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer, who is on the task force, said: ‘Without radical reform, vulnerable victims who do not have the confidence to come forward will remain unprotected.’

Baroness Doreen Lawrence, who is also on the group, said victims and witnesses needed ‘a guarantee they will be properly treated’.
