In the 12th century, people in France played a game called «jeu de paume ("game of the palm")». At first they hit a ball with the palm of their hands, but in the 16th century they started using rackets. Some time later they started to call the game «tennis», because the players would shout the word "tenez!", which can be translated as "hold!", "receive!" or "take!", a call from the server to their opponent. In 1873 people started playing tennis outside and they called the outdoor game «lawn tennis». At first only men played tennis at Wimbledon, but in 1884 women started playing, too.
There are a lot of great players in tennis, some of them are Serena and Venus Williams, Naomi Osaka, Maria Sharapova, Billie Jean King, John McEnroe, Sania Mirza, Anna Kournikova, Andre Agassi, Simona Halep, Nick Kyrgios, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, Stan Wawrinka, Pete Sampras, Caroline Wozniacki and others!
