I just had the pleasure of viewing Miroslav Slaboshpitsky's Ukrainian film "The Tribe." The film is set at a Ukrainian deaf boarding school and includes a completely deaf ensemble talking solely through sign language with no subtitles or voice-over.
The plot revolves around Sergey, a new student who joins a group of bullies and becomes involved in their illegal activities. As the tale progresses, there are several plot twists and turns, with themes of love, treachery, and murder.
Overall, I felt "The Tribe" was a moving and thought-provoking picture. The absence of words brought a distinct and powerful depth to the storyline, and the ensemble delivered outstanding performances. Nonetheless, some graphic violence made me uneasy, and the sad finale left me feeling a little unfulfilled.
Notwithstanding these flaws, I would strongly suggest "The Tribe" to anybody seeking a tough and unusual cinematic experience. It's set in an unusual and intriguing setting, and the plot is guaranteed to make an effect on the audience.
