originally the word shamrock meant a young blossoming clover. this pretty plant grows all over ireland . in the 18th century it became a recognized symbol of the country and was mentioned in folk songs and poetry the time. thomas moore devoted it his verses which increased the popularity of the modest plant. nowadays the shamrock is still strongly associated with ireland. irish state organizations like the post and police as well as trade and sporting organizations representing ireland use it in their emblems
