Even the royalty couldn't keep a secret like ice cream, and by the 1700s everyone was clamouring for a taste of the dessert. Cafés specializing in such exotic ice-cream flavours as macaroon and rum sprang up all over Europe.
Few ordinary people ate ice cream on a regular basis, for it was an elite treat that only the wealthy could afford. But two inventions eventually scooped ice cream out of the hands of the wealthy and plopped it into the lives of ordinary people: the refrigerator, invented in 1803; and the first hand-cranked ice-cream freezer, made in 1846. Ice-cream shops immediately spread across the country, and soon ice cream was available daily. What once was the food of kings and presidents could now be enjoyed by all.
