My friends and I bought our favourite sweets from the sweet-shop every day on our way to school. My favourites were Sherbet Suckers* and Liquorice Bootlaces.* Thwaites told me I should never eat Liquorice Bootlaces. Thwaites's father was a doctor. He had said that they made it from rats' bloodю The father had told his young son much about Liquorice Bootlaces when he had found that his son ate it. "Every ratcatcher in the country," the father had said, "takes his rats to the Liquorice Bootlace Factory and they pay is him for each rat. Many ratcatchers have become millionaires because they sell rats to the Factory." "Don't ever eat them," the father had said. "If you eat you'll get ratitis." "What is ratitis, Daddy?" young Thwaites had asked.
"It's the rat poison that gives you ratitis," the father said. "Yes, but what will happen to you if you catch it?" young Thwaites had asked. "Your teeth become very sharp and pointed," the father had answered. "And a short tail grows out of your back * There is no medicine for ratitis. I know. I am a doctor." We all enjoyed Thwaites's story. We asked him to tell us this story many times on our walks to and from school. But any of us didn't stop buying Liquorice Bootlaces. Except Thwaites.
