The story of Robinson Crusoe is based on real facts. Alexander Selkirk, a shoemaker's son from Scotland, went to sea in 1695. He was only 19 years old at that time. In 1704, his ship was damaged and he decided to get off and not sail any further. He landed on a desert island and the ship sailed away. Alexander had only his clothes, a gun, a few tools, tobacco and the Bible. He spent about five years on the island. In 1709, English seamen rescued him.
