He was an old man who fished alone in a boat in the Gulf Stream. He had gone out to sea for eighty-four days and did not catch a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. The old man had deep wrinkles in the back of his neck. The brown spots of not dangerous tropical cancer covered his cheeks almost to the neck. His hands had scars from the lines that he used when catching heavy fish
Everything about him was old except his eyes and they were the same colour as the sea and were merry and undefeated.
