Schumacher could not have hoped for a better team-mate than Brundle in his first full year of competition. The East Anglian was a terrifically fast race driver, an Fl veteran who knew every trick in the book. He might have blown his young team- mate into the weeds, were it not for his lack of pace in qualifying, which often meant that he had to fight to make up positions from a lowly starting spot on the grid. Brundle was also very unlucky, a trait which seems to have affected Schumacher's team-mates throughout his career. If something was going to break, it was not usually on Michael's car. There is nothing sinister about this. Years of karting had given Schumacher an outstanding sensitivity to the vehicles that he was driving, and he would often sense an imperfection long before it might have made itself apparent to another driver
