1. The programme “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” originated in the United Kingdom. The original working title for the show was Cash Mountain. The title comes from a popular Cole Porter song of the same name. Ironically, the answer to the question in the song is “I don’t!” When the programme first appeared in the UK on 4 September, 1998, it was a new idea in the game show genre.

2. Only one contestant plays at a time (similar to some radio quizzes), and suspense is more important than pace. After using “lifelines”, contestants can either answer the question, use another “lifeline”, or walk away and keep the money. Each prompt can only be used once. “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” is the most internationally popular television programme of all time, having appeared in more than 100 countries worldwide.
