It’s a little late to look for hotel rooms for the Winter Games in February in Salt Lake City, although the Salt Lake committee says rooms are available in Wendover, 113 miles west of Salt Lake City, and in other places outside the Salt Lake area.
Most Olympic visitors will stay in private homes and condominiums in the metropolitan area. Jerry Healey from Denver has sent a check for two rooms to a Salt Lake City owner for $550 per night. ‘And I don’t even know what it’s going to be like’, Healey said.
SLOC, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, has about 220,000 hotel rooms within two hours of Salt Lake City under contract. Sixty percent of these rooms are already booked by journalists, Olympic sponsors and officials.
Some rooms are reserved especially for guestss who are staying a certain number of nights or buying Olympic packages that include lodging. Other rooms are held by hotels who will probably charge higher prices just before the Olympics.
As most of the city’s hotel rooms were booked some time ago, SLOC is marketing private homes and condominiums for rental during the Olympics. Private residences cost from $150 to more than $3,000 per night. Condominiums run from $2200 to about $550 per night.
Meanwhile, some Olympic visitors have already booked hotel rooms outside Salt Lake. ‘I tell people that we are 100 miles away from Salt Lake City but they don’t care. They just want to know if there is a good road to the sites and if it is open year-round.’
