The school of the Bolshoi Ballet. It was founded in 1773 by the Italian dancing master Filippo Beccari and originally took its students from the Moscow Orphanage. In 1806 the school came under control of the Russian Imperial Theatres. Teachers in the early 19th century included I. Valberkh, A. Glushkovsky, and F. Hullin-Sor. In the 1860s the school moved to a new location on Neglinnaya Street. Although standards continued to improve through the 1800s, the Moscow school was always overshadowed by its great rival in St Petersburg. In the 1930s teachers from St Petersburg began working in Moscow, among them Gerdt, Kozhukhova, and Gusev. In 1967 the school opened a new building, the largest ballet school in the world, with 20 studios and its own theatre. Also known as the Moscow Choreographic School and the Bolshoi Ballet School.
