During WWII the Eastern Front was the site of nearly all extermination camps, death marches, ghettos, and pogroms. The sites were mostly commanded by Nazi soldiers, but heavily relied upon the support and cooperation of the local population to operate them.
Many Eastern European nations portray the actions committed, by their population, as a result of coercion, and describe themselves as victims of the Nazis.
