Did you know you have more than 600 muscles in your body? They do everything from pumping blood throughout your body to helping you lift your heavy backpack. You control some of your muscles, while others — like your heart — do their jobs without you thinking about them at all. Muscles are special fibrous tissues of the body. They are all made of the same material, a type of elastic tissue (sort of like the material in a rubber band). Thousands of small fibers make up each muscle.
Muscles control movement and many organic functions by contracting in response to nerve signals. Skeletal muscles are called voluntary because they can be consciously controlled. They are attached to bones by tough fibrous tissues called tendons. Other muscles, such as the stomach muscles and the heart, are involuntary and are operated automatically by the central nervous system. The most important muscle in the body is the heart.
Healthy muscles have good muscle tone. Not all muscles are healthy. An inflammation of a tendon, or of a muscle itself may occur. When a muscle becomes fatigued, it sometimes contracts violently and painfully. This condition is known as a cramping.
