Ili was the daughter of one of the richest men whose name was Balkhash. She was famous for her beauty in the village. Karatal was a poor shepherd. He watched the sheep in the steppe. When Ili grew up, it was time to give her in marriage to someone. Balkhash wanted to find her a husband. There were many rich candidates, who wanted to marry III. Then Balkhash decided to organize the contest for the future husbands. He promised to give his daughter to the winner of the contest as a wife. But ill didn't want to marry the man she didn't know. She loved Karatal very much. So, she helped Karatal to win the contest. When Balkhash knew about this, he was very angry with them. He told his people to kill Karatal. Then, ili and Karatal ran away from the village. Balkhash and his people followed them and caught them. As the legend says Balkhash turned Ili and Karatal into the rivers. And he turned himself into the lake between them. Even then he didn't give the young lovers the chance to be together. That is how lake Balkhash and the rivers Ili and Karatal appeared. 1.
