Culture shock can quickly become a very real problem when you're working abroad. It happens to different people at different times. Some people feel totally alienated from their new surroundings almost as soon as they step out of the plane. Others are so excited to be in a foreign country that they don't think about the emotional effect of the cultural differences they encounter until the novelty of being in a new country wears off.
I tend to be one of those people who soak up the atmosphere. I am very curious and want to know everything immediately. When I first arrived in my host country, I tried hard to integrate into the culture by stopping locals in the street and practising my new language skills, but I was met with a frosty reception. It didn't occur to me that I had asked too many questions – that I had annoyed people. Later, in my new apartment, I realised that the problem had to do with cultural differences.
Shortly after that, I began to feel strange and didn't want to go anywhere. I had to go out of course, as I needed to buy food and go to work. However, I found that I was shutting myself off from my colleagues and was put off by socialising. I stayed in my apartment and didn't leave it for several weeks, except to go to work and buy food on my way home.
Finally, one of my friends from home came for a visit. She dragged me out of the house, insisting that I showed her around the city. In the beginning that was a nightmare, but her enthusiasm started to rub off on me and I began to enjoy exploring again.
When she left, I was afraid that I would lapse back into my 'culture shock shell' but, by that time, I had made friends with some of my colleagues, so I had people to explore with outside work hours. At one stage I almost gave up and went back home. I'm very glad now that I didn't. I never looked back and really enjoy living and working in my host country.
