The central and largest part of the country is desert and is known as the Outback. Not many people live in the Outback. Most people live on or near the south east and east coasts where the climate is better. Before Australia was discovered by Europeans back in the 17th century, it was inhabited by people called the Aborigines. Stories and painting have always been an important part of life for the Aborigines. They use them to pass on their beliefs and traditions from generation to generation. Today, only 2% of the population is Aboriginal but aboriginal culture has influenced Australian society in many is known all over the world.
