READING Read the text and decide if the statements 1-5 are T (True) or F (False). I am Fritha Moran and I am here today at Funtley Junior School for children between five and eleven years old to see some teachers. This looks like an ordinary school but actually, this is a very special school because not all the teachers in the school are people: some are dogs. And whilst pets are not allowed in school generally, Funtley school is one of the first schools in the UK to have dogs for educational purposes. There is one dog for each of the typical school subjects, English, Maths, Science and even Physical Education and they are owned by the teachers. We are visiting Year 1 today to find out more. The first lesson today is Physical Education. Dylan can't run today because his leg hurts a bit, but he isn't sitting on his own watching everyone play football. He's sitting with Jessie, a friendly husky dog. At the end of the class, the teacher gives Jessie her dog ball to play with for a minute. Jessie loves pushing her ball with her nose! Time to go inside to see Year 2. I am greeted by Mrs Singleton, the teacher. Then the Teaching Assistant, Bamey, comes over. Barney is an eight- year old Labrador dog. He sees me straight away and comes up to me as if to say 'hello' and tell me that he works here. He is very calm. His job is helping the students to read. I watch as he sits next to Jemima, one of the students. She usually finds reading hard, but today she is reading a story to Barney and I can see that she is happy and reading well. Barney is making reading fun. Good job, Barney! The teachers at Funtley hope that having a dog in the classroom helps students learn. I think they are right! 1 Funtley School is a secondary school for children 11 and over. 2 Students at Funtley bring their own dogs to school. 3 Jessie and Dylan watch football together. 4 Jemima finds reading easier with Bamey there. 5 Fritha agrees that dogs in classrooms is a good thing. -
