Bill Dancer and his nine-year-old daughter Susan (nicknamed "Curly Sue") live on the street, making a living from petty scams. Bill says: “We do this without breaking the law. More precisely, without breaking good laws ... ". One day, Bill fakes a small accident, pretending to be hit by a car. The driver of this car is divorce lawyer Gray Ellison, an unmarried and successful woman. Gray excuses Bill and Sue for dinner. Soon, in the same underground parking lot, Gray knocks them down again, for real this time. Out of guilt, she takes Bill and Sue to her home, which makes her boyfriend Walker very angry. In his opinion, Gray should not have allowed the homeless to manipulate her, but should have left them on the street.
For Susan and Bill, a different life begins - clean bed, homemade food and comfort. But Gray is worried about Sue's developmental level: at nine years old, the child cannot read, despite the fact that he amazes people by spelling the specially memorized word "asphyxia", but cannot spell the word "cat". Bill intends to leave and continue his old way of life, but Gray persuades him to stay, since she has already become attached to the girl. She buys new clothes for Bill and Sue and takes them to the restaurant, but Walker humiliates and insults Bill at the restaurant, and he and Sue have to leave. After an altercation with Walker, Gray joins Bill and Sue.
Later, Bill confesses to Gray that, in fact, Sue is not his own daughter: he accidentally met her mother in Florida, and when the woman died suddenly, Bill began to raise the child himself, falling in love with her as his own. When he lost his job and money, he could not bring himself to send the girl to an orphanage and took her with him. Gray is imbued with respect for Bill and decides to continue to help him.
Then life continues to improve: Bill gets a job, makes plans to send Susan to school. But the rejected Walker begins to take revenge on Bill and Gray. He calls the Children's Rights Committee, and Bill ends up behind bars, since he has never officially received custody of the girl, and Susan is in an orphanage. But Gray, as a lawyer, uses his connections, in particular, by blackmailing his client, Mr. Arnold, to prepare the necessary documents for legal guardianship of Susan, and pays a bail so that Bill Dancer will be released. Meanwhile, Walker is about to meet Gray in the same underground parking lot. But Gray, realizing that it was Walker who set up Bill and Sue out of revenge, hits him against the wall with his car. Gray, Bill and Susan connect and live like a real family.

At the end of the film, Gray quits his job as a lawyer, exchanges a Mercedes-500 SL for a Jeep Cherokee. Susan goes to school. As the end credits roll, Gray, Bill and Sue walk down the street.
