There are many coincidences in history that have changed the future of nations or the world. One of them is called the discovery of America by Columbus, who tried to reach India by Western means.
On August 3, 1492, three caravels, Santa Maria, Pinta, and Ninja, under the direction of the Spanish navigator Christopher Columbus, set sail from the port of Palos de la Frontera. It took sailors more than two months to reach the land - the islands of the Bahamas. On October 12, 1492, the Spaniards landed on the island of San Salvador. Although Columbus is considered the discoverer of America, the first two expeditions were made to the Caribbean islands and only in the third and fourth (1498 - 1500, 1502-1504) the navigator discovered the lands of the continent (South and Central America).
Of course, the discovery of America is not the sole merit of Christopher Columbus. If he had not sailed to the West, it would have been done later by someone else (for example, Amerigo Vespucci, who carried out a similar expedition, but later). However, this day 527 years ago became fateful for Europe and the world.
Most people in Columbus’ days thought that the earth was flat, and they did not believe that a route to India across the Atlantic would be shorter and safer than a route around Africa. He did not have the money to buy ships and hire sailors. At first, Columbus asked the king of Portugal to pay for his voyage. The king asked his advisers, and after their report he denied helping Columbus.
But Columbus travelled to Spain to ask Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand for help. Six years later Isabella gave Columbus three caravels: the Santa Maria, the Nina, and the Pinta. Columbus’s crew last saw land on the eastern horizon on the 9th of September, 1492. In October, 1492 the lookout on the Pinta saw something like a white cliff shining in the moonlight. Columbus named the land he had reached San Salvador. He thought they landed in Asia.
In 1493, Columbus was back in Spain with two of his ships. He brought parrots, an alligator, a few pieces of gold jewellery, some unusual plants, and six American Indians.
