A. Modern bicycles, based on technological innovations from the late 19th century,
remain the most efficient means of human transportantion ever invented. Those same
innovations had a huge influence on other forms of transportation. Manufacturing
improvements in the bicycle industry led to the development of the automobiles
and aircraft. The positive influence of the bicycle continues today as pedalling
technology improves and more and more people pedal.
B. In terms of energy used and distance covered, travelling by bicycle is far more
economical than travelling by horse, motorcycle, or car, and even more economical than walking or running. Of course, the energy of bicycle riders is the food they eat. An average cyclist can cover approximately five kilometres on 100 calories. the number of calories in a banana.
С. Using a bike can provide an excellent physical workout. It exercises the main
muscle groups (back and legs), increases heart fitness and improves blood
circulation. It can provide these health benefits without intense effort and without
the risk of injury found in sports such as tennis, basketball, soccer or running.
D. Historians say that the true "father of the bicycle" is the German inventor Karl
von Drais. In 1818 he patented a simple vehicle consisting of a wooden beam
with two wheels attached to a primitive steering mechanism. The rider sat on a
cushion on the wooden beam and moved by pushing his feet along the ground.
Е. As the bicycle became safer and more comfortable, women, at least the more
daring women, finally had the chance to experience the enjoyment and freedom of
pedalling a bike At that time in many places, women were generally not allowed
to perform intense exercise out of a mistaken fear that the female constitution
was too weak. The bicycle helped change that notion.
F. In the Netherlands and Denmark the governments have built thousands of
kilometres of bike paths to give cyclists safe and uninterrupted routes separated
from other traffic. Another example of a cycling country is China. Decades ago,
with a policy of mass production of inexpensive bicycles, Chinese authorities set
out to produce attordable transportation for citizens.
G. It is a fact that bicycles are an inexpensive and efficient means of personal
transportation, especially for short trips and in densely populated areas. Also
bike rides don't generate air or noise pollution, don't rely on petrol or other
nonrenewable resources for fuel, and don't require a lot of space for travel and
parking. It means they don't require huge paved roads or parking lots.
