WHO - используется в придаточных, которые относятся к одушевленным, при этом WHO в придаточном является подлежащим, то есть то, что сказано в придаточном предложении, сделал тот, кого это придаточное одушевляет (друзья, которые путешествовали), по-русски здесь может стоять только который / которая / которые (вариант с "которое" сходу в голову даже не приходит...
