In spite of living in the 21st century people still believe in strange things. We call these beliefs " superstitions". Usually they have some kind of explanation but most people do not think about it - they just follow the tradition. Some superstitions are common and some are unique. Here are a few examples of Belarusian superstitions:
Never whistle in the house – that blows all your money away.
Do not pass things over a threshold – that means bad luck for you.
Do not sit at the corner of a table, or you won’t be able to get married for at least another 7 years.
If a black cat crosses your path, it's bad luck.
If you forget something at home and have to go back to get it, you'll have bad luck, but if you look in a mirror when you come back, you'll have good luck.
When hearing the cuckoo for the first time in a year, you need to shake the money in your pocket to ensure there will always be money throughout the year.
