Mass media
Mass media (that is, the press, the radio and television) play an important role in the life of society. They inform, educate and entertain people. They also influence the way people look at the world and make them change their views. Mass media mould public opinion. Millions of people in their spare time watch TV and read newspapers.
Everybody can find there something interesting for him. On the radio one can hear music, plays, news and various discussions or commentaries of current events. Multiple radio or TV games and films attract a large audience. Newspapers are used in different ways, but basically they are read.
There is a lot of advertisment on mass media. Some of the TV and radio stations and newspapers are owned by different corporations. The owners can advertise whatever they choose.
But it is hardly fair to say that mass media do not try to raise cultural level of the people or to develop their artistic taste. Mass media brings to millions of homes not only entertaiment and news but also cultural and educational programs.
There are more then six TV channels and lot's of radio stations and newspapers now in the Russian Federation.

Whether we realize it or not, televisionplays a very important part in our lives. It'sthe main source of information and a cheap form of entertainment for millionsof people. It's the window on the world whichgives us an opportunity to "travel" all over the world, to"meet" different people and learn about their customs and traditions. It has the power to educate and broaden our minds. It helps us to relax after a hard day's work and escape from reality asthere's always a great variety ofprogrammes on TV: news and sports programmes, talk shows and TV games, documentaries and feature films, concerts and theatre performances... But at thesame tame we become more and more addicted to the TV.
Today it’s not a secret thatthere is at least one TV set in 98% of American households, and many have twoor three. And of course, television influences people’s mental picture of theworld, especially their perceptions of distant events. This is particularlytrue for younger viewers, who rely heavily on television for theirunderstanding of the world beyond their neighborhood. As the predominant massmedium, television is greatly criticized for failing to provide a complete, unbiased picture of reality. Some individuals and citizens' groupshave expressed concern about the level of violence in television programmes, particularly in action-adventure series andcartoons. They argue that viewers, especiallychildren, may learn to see violence as the only way to resolve conflicts. Andthis is partially confirmed by researches.
Some argue that parents are responsible forsupervising their children's TV viewing. But how? Children are often watchingtelevision when their parents are eithernot in the room or even at home. Many parents think they can use the help inmonitoring what their children see. The reality is that one in four families isheaded by a single parent, and in two-thirds of two-parent families, both parents are working. Furthermore, nearly 50percent of children between the agesof 6 and 17 have their own TV sets in their bedrooms. On the one hand TV becamean indication of both material wealth and the individual freedom (the US),on the other hand it became a trap for children. Not noticing how they arebecoming “couch potatoes” and TV maniacs. Children are reading less today, theyjust do not know how wonderful and interesting it is to read. Instead they spend hours in front of the "box"watching whatever's on — from second-rate Mexican soap operas to sillycommercials. The situation is thatthey rather watch a baseball game on TV than go play softball in thepark with friends or even go to a movie. Theirony is that although American television seems to promote images of slender, physically fit people, the more people watch TV, the less likely they are toexercise. Some people spend much of their free time lying on the couch watchingTV and eating junk food. As a result, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimiaare now common among young women. Manyteenage girls have become insecure about their bodies and obsessed with losing weight
The trick is to learn to controltelevision and use it intelligently. The ideal is to turn on the TV-set only when there's a really interestingprogramme. If you don't like acertain programme, why watch it? Why should you waste your free time on it ifyou can enjoy yourself in a more proper way? From all these we come to theconclusion that the impact of television is great and we should not watch one and allbut filter the useful information so that Television would be not a dead buthelpful hand
