Learning a foreign language is not as easy as it may seem. It requires a high level of dedication and willingness. However, having strong motivation can really help so in today’s column I want to tell the readers why I am learning English and why it’s OK to struggle even you know how this language can help you.
Well, first things first, I am a secondary school student, and I am learning English because I think it can help me achieve my dream – to become a well-known actress – in the future. By now, I’ve been learning English for about seven years starting from the age of seven, but sometimes it’s still hard for me to speak it. My English learning journey started at school (and continues to this day), however, now I also have a private tutor. My parents and I decided that I needed a tutor because my school offers only two hours of English a week, which is clearly not enough for learning a language. Another reason was that although my school lessons are just fine, I sometimes find that I can learn much quicker if a more personalised approach is used. So now I have four English classes a week and I also try to learn something new every day using various apps, for example, Duolingo. I don’t think I have a set number of hours I spend learning English per day as sometimes I can spend about four hours doing my homework and sitting in class, and sometimes it’s only about half an hour, however, I think that even fifteen minutes a day is much better than nothing.
Now, I think it’s time to talk about results. While doing so, we always need to remember that language learning is a slow process so there is nothing wrong if you don’t see immediate results. For example, I even if I think that there was no significant improvement in my language skills compared to last year, I still know that I’ve learnt many new words I didn’t know before. What I want to say is that the changes are there – they are just not that big as we want them to be.
All in all, I want to say that although learning English may seem almost impossible at first glance, you just need to make small steps every day, always remember why you are doing it and, most importantly, never hesitate to ask for help if there is something you cannot understand or just want to know about.
