Текст:
We need sugar. We need it to help our bodies work properly and we need it to give us energy. Too much of it, though, and we get sick. It causes cavities in our teeth, makes us gain weight and even leads to diabetes. We know sweets and chocolate are high in sugar and fizzy drinks like cola contain around seven teaspoons of sugar in each can. The real problem is that sugar is often hidden in some foods and we don’t always realise just how much we are consuming each day. After a tiring workout, exercise enthusiasts often reach for bottles of fruit-flavoured water. They have just spent an hour and a half burning calories, only to ruin it all with a totally unexpected 300 calories. And if you thought it’s just drinks that hide something sweet, you’d be wrong! There are some even more surprising sugar-filled foods. These include tinned and chopped tomatoes, ketchup, breakfast cereals and multi-grain cereal bars as well as ready-made meals like curries and pasta dishes. A pasta sauce made at home is a great healthy meal, but buy that sauce from a supermarket and it could have as much sugar as a can of cola! Some experts say that it’s not all the fat we eat that is causing our obesity problems, but all the sugar that sneaks in without us knowing about it. We often don’t realise that by choosing low-fat or fat-free options, we might be increasing the amount of sugar we are taking in. In fact, if you buy a fat-free salad dressing, it may contain up to four grams of sugar per tablespoon of dressing, which is even more than the full-fat variety! Most of this hidden sugar is used to make the product last longer or to reduce the cost of production. Unfortunately, the big companies don’t like telling us the complete truth about the sugar in their products. That’s why reading the labels and packaging of our foods is so important. We don’t have to cut sugar out of our diet completely, but we should consume it in moderation and be fully informed of where it hides!
