The 23rd of June is the International Balalaika Day.

Balalaika is a Russian national musical instrument. It is a symbol of Russia. Matryoshka, bears are symbols of Russia too. You can see pictures where a bear is playing the balalaika.

In the past, this instrument was very popular. People used different materials to make balalaikas. For example, Ivan Khandoshkin (1747-1804) made his balalaika from a pumpkin.

Some people can think that it is easy to play the balalaika, but it is not true.

Balalaika sometimes has only one string (струна), but it can also have four strings or even more. But it is not that easy to learn to play it.
