Self-help books are everywhere nowadays. They aim to help people improve their lives, for example by teaching personal development strategies or giving top tips to become happier. These books are often written by professional psychologists, life coaches or successful business people. In recent years, some have been written by celebrities such as actors and sports stars. In the USA alone, the self-help book industry is worth almost ten billion dollars.
B
Why have self-help books become so popular, and when and where did the idea start? It is thought that the first of these books, called Self-Help, was written by Scottish author Samuel Smiles in 1859. In it, he encourages education as a way of achieving more in life for both rich and poor people. The book was published around the beginning of the nineteenth century, a time of great economic and social change, when people were working hard to better their lives. The book was an immediate success and sold over 250,000 copies.
C
During the twentieth century, other people developed the idea of the self-help book. French pharmacist Emile Coue wrote a book about the mind and different types of thinking. His work encouraged people to believe in the power of the mind over the body. Self-help books often responded to world events, too. During the 1930s, when the US economy was suffering, there were books such as Think and Grow Rich and How to Win Friends and Influence People. These books aimed to help people find work and become wealthy.
D
In the second half of the twentieth century, self-help books started to become more personal and thoughtful. One of the popular books at this time was The Power of Positive Thinking. In this phase, lots of self-help authors included ideas from other cultures in their writing. However, many self-help books from this time have been criticised for not being scientific; as they were often based on the writer’s opinions or life experiences, critics said that these ideas were unlikely to be useful for large numbers of people.
E
Since the beginning of this century, many self-help books have provided suggestions for reducing the impact of technology and materialism on our daily lives. Over 75 percent of young people say using social media causes them feelings of anxiety and inadequacy and are looking for ways to manage life more successfully. Modern self-help books present a range of ideas on how to do this, including suggestions on how to live more sustainably.
F
Twenty-first-century self-help books often focus on self-improvement or personal development, which fits with more modern attitudes. These new books recognise that people are individuals and encourage small, gradual lifestyle changes for greater happiness. This contrasts with self-help books of the past, which tended to present one big life changing idea as the way to personal improvement.
