I think, Mr Briggs was in shock. He couldn't beleive that the dream of Bernand become true. He could fire him because he slept that night enstead of working. Or maybe he was trying to thank him this way. I have many versions of the reason for his firing. Or maybe Mr Briggs was so much afraid of the truth, that he decided to fire him. That way he was trying to go away from the truth. I can only guess why Mr Briggs went this way.
