Text 2C. Pros and Cons of the Food Industry

Modern food industry mostly means mass production of food. First of all
it is much cheaper than individual production of meals from raw ingredients. There are sometimes some problems of poor quality ingredients and questionable processing and preservation methods.
Most people live in cities and have little time for the preparation of food.
The food industry offers products to be boiled or to be heated up in the
microwave oven within a few minutes. But food processing can lower the nutritional value of foods. Fresh food contains a higher proportion of vitamins and minerals than a processed product.

Benefits of food processing include toxin removal, preservation, de-activating spoilage and pathogenic micro-organisms. Modern supermarkets, long voyages, and armies would not be possible and feasible. Processed food ingredients are often produced in high quantities and "low-level" hygiene standards in manufacturing.
Modern food processing also improves the quality of life for people with allergies, diabetics, and other people who cannot consume some common food elements. However such foods often include food additives, such as flavourings and different agents, which may be unhealthy. Preservatives contrin nitrites or sulphites which may cause severe health problems. Besides processed foods often have many calories.
