И, тем не менее,удивительным образом, из трех сестер, обитающих у Тимоти, именно тетушка Эстеризлучала, несмотря на свою отрешенность, атмосферу, — кто-то мог бы дажесказать свободомыслия, но побоялся бы зайти слишком далеко. Лучше, пожалуй,было бы сказать, что она внушала ощущение, будто, из любви к тихой жизни, онаотказалась от большего количества желаний, мыслей, надежд и антипатий, чем какая-либоиз ее сестер вообще была способна иметь. Людям казалось даже, что тетушка Эстерне то, что не приняла свое прошлое, но что всю свою жизнь она отрекалась отпрошлого, которое у нее вполне могло быть. Им также казалось, что она знала обэтом, и находила это, странным образом, не трагичным, а комичным, как будто онавсе время говорила себе: «Быть такой, когда на самом деле ты совсем не такая, —забавно, не правда ли?»
