I think that after leaving school you should apply for university. You will get a better education and eventually will become more professional. But if you are ready to work and have enough knowledge then applying for university isn't your option.
You will need a skill of time-management for sure. Others treats depend on the professional that you choose. If it is finance then you should have logical thinking and be good at math. If it is a creative job then being able to draw is absolutely necessary and so on.
You can start working on low-paid job because you don't have any knowledge and experience and eventually you will get a well-paid job. If you have some skills, for instance, in IT sphere or you know second language then you will be in priority among hiring managers. But you should know that after graduating college or university your knowledge probably will be deeper and better so you should consider both options.
It's hard to say anything about taking a gap year. If you can afford you can take a gap year to travel around the world. May be it will help you understand what you want to do in your life. By the way, you can take a gap year just to work and gain experience. It's up to you to decide. I should just say that taking a gap year during studying may not always be helpful and year later you may forget what you have already learnt in university. Therefore, it may be hard to keep up with the rest of the students.

Should you earn more money if you do an essential job such as being a doctor or nurse, than if you work in a commercial business?
Yes, people doing essential jobs should earn more because they save the lives of millions and they also make our world much better. Nonetheless, I think that sometimes a person who work in a commercial business can earn much more money than, for instance, doctor. It's because of their job. Everybody would like to have more money that is why people invest money or do some operations to double or triple them. It's just how our society works. But I still think that people who help others, who save lives should earn much more money than a common worker.
