The telephone is a wonderful invention of the 19th century. A lot of outstanding scientists and engineers worked in the field of telephone communication, but the inventor of the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell, an American of Scottish origin. The invention of the telephone dates back as far as 1876.

The first hand-held mobile phone was demonstrated by John F. Mitchell and Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing around 2.2 pounds (1kg). From 1990 to 2011, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 6 billion.
A mobile phone is a device that can make and receive tel-ephone calls over a radio link while moving around a wide geographic area. It does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile phone operator, allowing access to the public telephone network. By contrast, a cordless telephone is used only within the short range of a single, private base station.
Whatever may be said against mobile phones their ad-vantages have always scored over their disadvantages. They have proved useful for every purpose. Nothing is as comfortable as a mobile phone for communicating over a distance. It is hard to imagine life without mobiles. They are now inexpensive, us-er-friendly and equipped with almost every latest feature you desire. Today, a technologically advanced mobile phone can perform as many tasks as well as that of a personal computer.
Nowadays you can make voice calls, send text messages, take photos and record video clips with mobile phones. However, the latest 3G phones can do much more than that. 3G stands for ‘third generation’. With 3G phones you can do many things that you normally do on a computer. For example, you can access the Internet and send and receive e-mails. You can download songs from the Internet and play them on your phone, and you can also listen to the radio. The most recent phones actually allow you to watch TV so you never need to miss your favourite programmes. Mobile phone manufacturers are hoping that in the future a mobile phone is the only gadget you’ll ever need!
Mobile phone etiquette is getting more and more attention nowadays. Do you know people who are always using their cell phones when they go out? Or do you often hear annoying ring-tones at the movies? Some etiquette experts say that because of the smartphones and other electronic devices, our society’s ‘techno-etiquette’ seems to be declining. Respecting public and personal space, maintaining privacy, and not disturbing others are some general principles a person should keep in mind when using a mobile phone. Here are some simple tips:
• Be completely present in a meeting or other important
event by keeping your phone silent
• Avoid discussing private or confidential matters in public − you never know who might be listening to your phone call
• If you’re expecting an important call, let your companions know ahead of time and excuse yourself when your phone rings • Use headphones while watching video or listening to music in public
• And don’t text and drive − it puts your life and the lives of others at risk.
